White City Ashgabat and the 100th anniversary of the Bauhaus: a style that is always in trend
An exhibition was opened at the Museum of Fine Arts of Turkmenistan - “White City, White Architecture”. The exhibition is timed to coincide with the centenary of the Bauhaus Higher School of Construction and Art Design.
The Bauhaus style is the hallmark of Germany; it was founded in Weimar in 1919. Adherents of this style advocated the reform of the building culture of Germany, for the union of art and crafts.
- We want to show the connection between the Bauhaus and Ashgabat styles. They are somewhat similar, for example, in the use of white. Ashgabat is a white city, so we decided to hold an anniversary exhibition here,” says German Ambassador to Turkmenistan Nighthart Hefer-Wissing.
- After the First World War, currents of social life formed in Germany, which were strongly influenced by art and architecture. One hundred years ago, the Bauhaus association, which emerged as a trend in architecture and penetrated many other areas, became the personification of the new society. In our current action, not only the exhibition itself is important, but also the master classes that we hold at the Academy of Arts of Turkmenistan,” says architect Philippe Moiser.
Students studying the art of design and architecture are invited to delve into the main idea of the Bauhaus, because supporters of this style considered themselves adherents of the "white modern".
This is a topical issue for Turkmenistan, where the development of architecture most graphically reflects the country's socio-economic growth. One of the questions raised by students at master classes is “digitization” and architecture planning.
At the exhibition in the Museum of Fine Arts, the best student works selected during the competition by Professor Moiser are also presented: in total, 16 projects recognized by the German expert as the most original of the 186 creative projects can be seen on this site.
The exhibition provides a wide platform for the exchange of experience between specialists from Turkmenistan and Germany in the field of building architecture. Design, graphics, painting, sculpture - a wide range of artistic and architectural trends was presented on a competitive basis.
A student of the Academy of Arts Ogulmaral Tachmuradova demonstrted her work “Flower Field”. On the model made of twisted tubes of colored paper, - a dynamic composition of convex lines. Following the ideas of Vasily Kandinsky, Ogulmaral created her flowering meadow, creatively reproducing the Turkmen spring in the foothills.
The Cube of Gulyalek Orazova attracted great attention of both visitors to the exhibition and students and classmates of the girl. A composition called "Chaos" - a random "movement" of frozen geometric shapes - symbolizes one of the galaxies of the universe.
“Students begin to do such work in their first year,” says Jeren Boltaeva, a teacher at the Department of Art History. –Thus, future architects, experimenting with geometry in space, learn to find compositional solutions in which rhythm and chaos, dynamics, condensation and static should be present for harmony.
