Turkmen parliament will become bicameral

Berdimuhamedov submitted for discussion by the People’s Council the issue of transition to a bicameral structure of the national parliament, proposing to unite the People’s Council and the Mejlis of Turkmenistan. According to the head of state, the introduction of a bicameral system will contribute to a wider representation in parliament, and, therefore, a more complete consideration of the interests of the population in the development of laws. To prepare proposals for reforming the legislative body, the head of state signed a decree establishing the Constitutional Commission to amend and supplement the country's Basic Law. This does not mean that changes will occur in the near future. The commission will present its proposals at the next meeting of the People’s Council, which will be held in 2020 in Ashgabat.
