USAID representative’s visit to Turkmenistan - Investment climate and private sector in the spotlight


USAID Deputy Assistant Administrator for Central and South Asia, Javier Piedra, visited Turkmenistan as part of his first official tour to Central Asia. Piedra oversees USAID’s egional development programs aimed at ensuring inclusive growth, economic diversification, education, health and food security. In order to get acquainted with the effectiveness of USAID economic programs on the ground, a representative of this central structure, responsible for administering civilian foreign aid and development assistance, visited Ashgabat and Turkmenabad. In Turkmenabad, Piedra met with a group of businessmen to exchange views on the efforts of the United States to improve the investment climate in Turkmenistan. In Ashgabat, he visited the first private laboratory for food safety in Turkmenistan, the project of which is being developed by the Union of Industrialists and Entrepreneurs with the support of USAID. A number of meetings with representatives of the government were also devoted to the issues of bilateral partnership. USAID has been working in Turkmenistan since 1992. The economic segment of the Agency's activities in the country is aimed at promoting the implementation of reforms, improving investment opportunities, strengthening the competitiveness of the private sector, economic education.
