UNDP and Turkmenistan initiate new project involving civil society


United Nations Development Program (UNDP) and Ministry of Labor and Social Protection of Turkmenistan launched a new project “Empowering Civil Society Organizations to participate in policy making and social service delivery”. The new project is a part of realization National Human Rights Action Plan for 2016-2020.
The presentation was attended with participation of over ten public associations and development partners of UNDP in Turkmenistan.
“UNDP supports strengthening of the democratic principles of governance in Turkmenistan through backing of the national institutions, developing human capital and supporting the civil society in the country”, said Ms. Elena Panova, UNDP Resident Representative during her opening remarks.
The project is expected to reach two main outcomes. First, conducting the baseline analysis of the social service sector, which will help to find out the current supply and demand in social services sector.
Second, strengthening of the capacity of CSOs on provision of social services and promoting the dialogue between the Government and CSOs. This will be achieved national forums and trainings on developing the skills and expertise of the CSOs.
The project also includes a study visit for experience exchange on the operation of the civil society sector in the field of rendering social services, additional training on the national legislation for public organizations.
The project is co-funded by governments of Germany and Finland.
Social organizations are an important tool in the process of democratization in the country and support for social development. UN attaches particular importance to cooperation with civil society, which is considered the "third sector" of society, along with the government and business. Partnership with civil society, therefore, advances the values the UN and contributes to the achievement of the Sustainable Development Goals.
