Third Phase of UN Counter-Terrorism Strategy launched in Ashgabat


High Level Meeting “Towards a comprehensive implementation of the United Nations Global Counter-Terrorism Strategy in Central Asia” was held on April 30th in the building of the MFA of Turkmenistan. The results of this meeting allowed launching the third phase of UN counter-terrorism project.
The new phase, which will be implemented in the next three years, is directed on further strengthening of the capacity of CA countries in combatting terrorism and prevention of violent extremism, as well as on strengthening of collaboration of the five countries of the region and international organizations in this direction.
The plan of actions for the implementation of the third phase has been developed by experts of te UN Regional Center for Preventive Diplomacy for Central Asia in the course of consultations with representatives of Central Asian countries and has been adopted at the meeting of the Ministers of Foreign Affairs of CA in December 2017 in Ashgabat.
The head of Counter-Terrorism Office of United Nations Vladimir Voronkov has spoken at the press conference dedicated to the results of the Meeting, noting that cooperation between United Nations Organization and Turkmenistan is an important factor for stability in Central Asia, since Ashgabat is a unique platform for consolidation of efforts of Central Asian countries in combatting the threats and challenges of the modern times.
Voronkov has also stated that the experience of Turkmenistan and Central Asian states in preventive diplomacy is a unique example of consolidation of efforts, directed on combatting terrorism and extremism, and expressed hope that this positive experience will be applied in other countries.
