Turkmenistan prepares to honor veterans of the Great Patriotic War on May 9


The Victory Day is celebrated on a large-scale in Turkmenistan. A number of solemn events are held every year in honor of the holiday. Theaters of the country show dramatized performances about war. Performances of creative groups took place on the concert stages. Veterans and widows of participants of the Great Patriotic War are honored in all parts of the country.
In honor of the 73rd Anniversary of the Great Victory, President Berdimuhamedov signed a Decree on awarding participants of the Great Patriotic War of 1941-1945, home front workers and widows of heroes who died in the war. For the unprecedented courage shown in battles, for the intestinal fortitude and for resolute and unshakable faith in victory shown on the home front, for the contribution to the education of youth in the spirit of patriotism and courage, the strengthening of the unity and solidarity of the Turkmen people, veterans will receive money and other valuable gifts.
War veterans also enjoy the wide support of the private sector of the country, of the Union of Industrialists and Entrepreneurs of Turkmenistan. Also, Dragon Oil International Company annually presents valuable gifts to the participants of the Great Patriotic War.
The fiery years of the Great Patriotic War of 1941-1945 had become a thing of the past, but it is impossible to forget the tragic events that left wound in hearts. Millions of human lives fell on the field of battle defending their native land and people during the grim years of war. They will never be forgotten.
The Turkmen people made a worthy contribution to the Great Victory. During the stern years of the war, thousands of Turkmen soldiers together with representatives of other fraternal peoples of the USSR selflessly fought on the battlefields, demonstrating unexampled courage and heroism, for the sake of the happy life of future generations, the freedom of all mankind. More than 300 thousand people of the Turkmen SSR voluntarily went to the front, which is every fourth citizen of the republic. 86 thousand heroes did not return home.
Turkmen people selflessly worked on the home front demonstrating a high example of patriotism and following the national motto “Everything is for the front, everything is for the Victory!” Mothers, the keepers of sacred family homes, young women and girls sent more than 7 thousand kilograms of gold and silver jewelry – family relics, and about 170 million rubles. The Akhal-Teke horses, which were not just helpers in the household, but family members, have been sent to the Defense Fund demonstrating the unity of the Turkmen people defending the native land. On one of them, Marshal of the Soviet Union G.K. Zhukov hosted the Victory Parade in 1945.
104 Turkmen soldiers received the high title of Hero of the Soviet Union for their courage demonstrated during the war, 15 became Full Cavalier of the Order of Glory. Over 130 thousand workers on the home front were awarded the Medal “For Valiant Labour in the Great Patriotic War 1941–1945”. Their heroism is reflected in national songs, literary and artistic works, and their lives itself have become a bright example of selfless service to people and Motherland.
