Solar Energy Road map - under the focus of OSCE expert meeting in Ashgabat

During the round table in Ashgabat, experts from a number of government agencies and research institutes exchanged ideas on the further development of the roadmap for introduction of solar energy in Turkmenistan. The discussion platform was held with the support of the OSCE Centre and the Mary Turkmen State Energy Institute.
The event was attended by the representatives and experts of the ministries of energy, finance and economy, the State Committee for environmental protection and land resources, the Institute of solar energy under Academy of Sciences, as well as other specialized and environmental organizations.
“While national authorities are taking the lead in the development of the road map, the OSCE Centre in Ashgabat stands ready to share best standards and practices from across the OSCE region and provide any other support within its mandate”, said the Head of the Center, Ambassador Natalya Drozd, expressing confidence that this meeting is an important step towards the deepening of the national dialogue and inter-institutional cooperation in the field of renewable energy.
Technologies for generating energy from alternative sources is one of the main areas of cooperation between the OSCE Centre and the Energy Institute. For example, last year a joint project was launched to support the Research center, running at the Institute, which deals with the establishment of scientific cooperation, primarily in order to conduct research in the field of development of non-traditional energy sources. In addition, seminars and trainings are arranged regularly.
Turkmenistan has a huge solar resource. This evidenced by the figures. The country enjoys over 300 sunny days or about 3100 hours of sunshine per year at a heat flux of 600-800 watts per square meter. The length of daylight in June reaches 16 hours and in the winter period varies from 8 to 10 hours.
