Turkmenistan jointly with UNDP commissioned innovative water facility in Kaahka
Ministry of agriculture and water management of Turkmenistan jointly with the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP), the Global Environment Facility (GEF) commissioned 15-km lengthy gravity-flowing Khivabad-Kaahka water conduit.
The innovative facility with capacity of over 14,000 cu m per day or 165 liters per second will take the water from local Layinsuv river and will allow to regulate the water supply in three directions: agriculture, drinking and domestic needs.
“Turkmenistan is a resource rich country and it is vital to utilize those resources rationally, so that they last for several generations”, said Ms. Elena Panova, UNDP Resident Representative, welcoming the fruitful cooperation between UNDP and the Government of Turkmenistan.
The chute features several innovations. It was built in a mountainous area considering nature-based solutions and brings the following significant ecological and energy efficiency benefits comparing to existing outdated system:
- Reduction of water infiltration and evaporation of the river Layinsuv at the territory of Kaahka district.
- Economizing of 486 Megawatt of electric energy per year by reducing the number of electric pumps used to produce the water from several dozen wells previously constructed for the residents of Kaahka
- Decreasing the volume of CO2 emissions by 240 tons.
- 35 000 local residents of Kaahka and surrounding villages and eventually, district’s population of 150,000 people will benefit project.
