Tashkent to host UNESCO-Central Asia subregional meeting on Silk Road heritage maintenance
On 13-14 September 2017, representatives of all five Central Asian national will gather in Tashkent at subregional meeting, to be organized by UNESCO office to Uzbekistan and country’s ministry of culture under the framework of UNESCO and the Japanese Funds-in-Trust joint project “Support for the Silk Roads World Heritage Sites in Central Asia (Phase II)”. On the sidelines of two-day event, the national experts of Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Turkmenistan, Tajikistan and Uzbekistan will assess the progress achieved in the development of organizational management plans for objects and segments of the Silk Road corridors. Simultaneously, training workshop will be organized in three Uzbek cities - Tashkent, Samarkand and Khiva, to attract young archaeologists and architects. On 12-20 September, specialists from two Japanese universities - the Mukogawa Women's University and Research Institute of Cultural Properties of Teikyo University - will introduce their colleagues with up-to-date modern methods of protecting, landscaping and using historical buildings and facilities through 3D modeling. As part of project “Support for the Silk Roads World Heritage Sites in Central Asia (Phase II)”, sponsored by Japan, UNESCO provides assistance to the countries of the region in capacity building of national authorities in the field of protection of cultural heritage sites, their further documentation and archaeological research. The associated organizations on behalf of Turkmenistan are the Ministry of Culture, National Directorate for the protection, study and restoration of historical and cultural monuments, and the Institute of History. Turkmenistan is a home for 29 ancient settlements and sites of the Great Silk Road. All of the are proposed for inclusion into the UNESCO World Heritage List, which already contains Ancient Merv, Kunyaurgench and Parthian fortresses of Nisa.
