Turkmenistan Airlines is the most active carrier from Punjab to UK
Sri Guru Ram Das Jee International Airport, Amritsar continues to experience record traffic growth both for domestic and international passengers. The figures released by Airports Authority of India show international traffic for February 2018 increased by 32 percent over the same month in past year and the domestic traffic increased by 86.6 percent, highest among all 34 international airports in India.
Referring to these recently released figures; Punjab News Express notes the role of foreign carriers, in particular, Turkmenistan Airlines, which increased capacity by upgrading aircraft to Boeing 777.
Amritsar Airport offers flights with Air India, Jet Airways, Spice Jet, Qatar Airways, Malindo Air, Uzbekistan Airways and Turkmenistan Airlines.
According to the representatives of Amritsar airport, Turkmenistan Airlines has been very popular with passengers travelling to UK. The fact is that Punjabis are the largest ethnic subgroup of Indians in the UK, making up the majority of all immigrants to the country from southern Asia. The Turkmenistan airline provides five flights a week to Birmingham via Ashgabat. It also connects Amritsar with London, Paris, and Frankfurt.
Recently, Airports International reported that Azzurra-Premiere Handling Ltd has won a contract to work with the Turkmenistan Airlines at Birmingham Airport. It will provide the ground handing for the airline’s five flights a week between Birmingham and Ashgabat from where there are on-going services to Amritsar.
The company said it made a major investment to acquire the equipment required to handle the airline’s fleet, which includes the Boeing 777-200 LR.
Julian Van Gelder, Managing Director of Premiere Handling commented: “The work with Turkmenistan is a great way to mark our first anniversary in Birmingham and builds upon our success in past year.”
