Minsk session of the CIS Council of foreign ministers - outcomes

Turkmen delegation headed by deputy foreign minister of Turkmenistan Serdar Berdimuhamedov participated in the meeting of the CIS Council of ministers of foreign affairs (CFM) hosted by Minsk, Belarus. The agenda of the regular session of the CMF included issues related to the current state and prospects of interstate cooperation on the platform of the Commonwealth in the political, economic and humanitarian spheres. All these topics were reflected in the 14 decisions taken at the gathering. In addition, according the foreign minister of the host country, the Minsk meeting was a preparatory stage for the upcoming summit of the Council of heads of state. In a narrow format, the parties had a thorough and confidential exchange of views on international policy topics and international problems related to the interests of the region. Among the documents signed by the Turkmen side are the decision initiated by Turkmenistan the declaring 2021 as the year of architecture and urban planning in the CIS, the Decision on implementation of the plan of multi-level inter-ministerial consultations in the CIS for 2017 and the Plan for 2018. In particular, under the new Plan, the current year will see twelve thematic consultations, which will continue the dialogue on the themes of economic cooperation, interaction of the CIS member-countries in international organizations such as UN, OSCE, in the information sphere, as well as countering new challenges and threats, etc. Also, agreement was reached on the elaboration and adoption in the CIS format of the statement of the foreign ministers of the CIS countries on the avoidance of the erosion of the principle of non-interference in the internal affairs of sovereign nations. This document will be aimed at promoting joint approaches to the most pressing international issues. On the sidelines of the event, the heads of delegations were received by President of Belarus Alexander Lukashenko. The head of the Turkmen delegation held a bilateral meeting with Kazakh foreign minister Kairat Abdrakhmanov. The sides discussed the development of trade, economic, cultural and humanitarian cooperation, as well as preparations for the upcoming summit of the Caspian countries. The next meeting of the CFM will be hosted by Dushanbe, Tajikistan, which currently holds the chairmanship in CIS. It will be held on 27 September, on the eve of the summit of heads of state.
