Agenda-2030: the progress within SDG area reviewed in Ashgabat

On March 30, the National Working Group on the Implementation of Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) in Turkmenistan and United Nations held a meeting at the Yildiz Hotel.
The results and recommendations of the MAPS (Mainstreaming, acceleration and policy support) mission as well as further steps of SDG implementation and possible support of the UN to the Government of Turkmenistan were discussed at the meeting.
“A crucial moment in the realizations of recommendations within the priority areas is the strengthening of coordination within SDG Working group, including support for UN agencies in implementing Agenda 2030 in the country” has stressed Elena Panova, UN Resident Coordinator in Turkmenistan.
The participants of the meeting were also introduced to the work of the High-Level Political Forum (HLPF) on sustainable development which is annually held under the auspices of the ECOSOC in the Unites Nations headquarters in New York. Turkmenistan has expressed intention to participate at this international platform to demonstrate its achievements and share experience on the implementation of SDGs on the national and regional level.
The guest speaker, Professor Alan Miller, the Special Envoy of the Global Alliance of National Human Rights Institutions has presented a Human Rights Based Approach to the SDGs and particularly Goal 16 – “Maintaining Peace, Justice and Effective Institutions”, which is one of the main agenda item for HLPF on sustainable development.
In 2017, Turkmenistan was one of the first countries in the region to host the MAPS mission, which was aimed to provide practical solutions to accelerate the implementation of Agenda 2030 in the country.
Thus, the Scientific and Methodological Center for Sustainable Development under the Institute for International Relations of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs was opened last year by the Resolution of the President of Turkmenistan.
