The Arctic is becoming increasingly significant in international affairs, with regional security emerging as a focus of new agreements between countries. At the same time, sovereignty and the right of local populations to determine their future remain central considerations.

On November 3, Greenland's parliament approved a trilateral security agreement with Denmark and the United States, allowing an expanded U.S. presence on the island while reaffirming Danish sovereignty and Greenlanders' right to self-determination.

The agreement was signed by the three parties in New York on September 22, 2026, on the sidelines of the United Nations General Assembly. The next step is approval by the Danish parliament.

According to reports, Danish lawmakers are expected to begin deliberations on November 12, with the process scheduled for completion by November 19. The agreement will enter into force once the required parliamentary procedures have been completed and the Kingdom of Denmark, together with Greenland, has notified the United States through a diplomatic note.

Under the arrangement, the United States will be permitted to modernize and expand operations at the Pituffik Space Base in northwestern Greenland. The agreement also provides for additional defense areas at Narsarsuaq and Mestersvig.

U.S. aircraft will be authorized to fly over and land throughout Greenland, with the provisions also covering its territorial waters. A central element of the document concerns Greenland's legal and political status.

The agreement explicitly reaffirms the sovereignty and territorial integrity of the Kingdom of Denmark while recognizing the people of Greenland as a people entitled to the right of self-determination.

The arrangement therefore combines expanded security cooperation with formal guarantees concerning the island's existing territorial status.

As reported by SSTV+, Greenland's parliament has approved an agreement with Denmark and the United States establishing new conditions for American activities on the island while reaffirming Danish sovereignty and Greenlanders' right to self-determination. Approval by the Danish parliament is still required before the agreement can enter into force.
