Ashgabat Coordinates Five-Party Agreement on Caspian Research

Two-day negotiations among authorized representatives of the Caspian littoral states have begun at the Caspian Sea Institute in Ashgabat, focused on finalizing the draft Agreement on Cooperation in the Field of Marine Scientific Research. The development of this five-party document serves as a practical implementation of an initiative proposed by the National Leader of the Turkmen people, Gurbanguly Berdimuhamedov, during the 5th Caspian Summit in Aktau.
Establishing a unified legal and organizational framework for fundamental and applied research on the Caspian Sea has become critically important in light of contemporary environmental challenges. Developing common standards for scientific inquiry will enable researchers from all five littoral states to coordinate the monitoring of biological resources, study sea-level fluctuations and hydrological processes, and minimize anthropogenic impact on the water body’s unique ecosystem.
Representatives from Azerbaijan, Iran, Kazakhstan, Russia, and Turkmenistan aim to make progress in finalizing the remaining provisions of the draft document by the conclusion of the meeting on October 28. The agreement is intended to lay a foundational basis for long-term scientific diplomacy in the Caspian region.
