Learning Through Play: UNICEF and the Ministry of Education of Turkmenistan Introduce New Standards in Kindergartens

From October 12 to 16, practical training sessions and consultations were held in Ashgabat and Mary, aimed at developing child-centered preschool education. The initiative was implemented by the Ministry of Education of Turkmenistan in collaboration with the United Nations Children's Fund (UNICEF).
The primary objective of these activities was to enhance the professional qualifications of educators and facilitate a transition toward modern teaching methods based on play and exploration. The programs involved specialists from the Ministry of Education and the National Institute of Education, as well as preschool teachers.
In Mary, international UNICEF expert Christian Fabbi and a national team visited pilot kindergartens to evaluate the practical application of play-based approaches. Approximately 35 specialists completed intensive training on fostering children’s cognitive, emotional, and creative skills, tailored to their individual needs.
In Ashgabat, a two-day seminar was held, during which participants reviewed and approved new methodological resources on psychology and pedagogy. These materials will be integrated into training programs for both current and future preschool educators across the country.
As noted by Zhanar Sagimbayeva, Deputy Representative of UNICEF in Turkmenistan, high-quality preschool education depends on the qualifications of professionals. The introduction of play-based methods will help create an inclusive and supportive environment for the harmonious development of every child.
The newly approved teaching materials will serve as a basis for improving the preschool education system and will provide a solid foundation for the future generation.
