From the world's factory to an innovation hub: how Chinese manufacturing is changing

For many years, the competitive strengths of Chinese industry were associated primarily with production scale, extensive supply chains and the ability to manufacture large volumes of goods quickly. Today, technology, automation and in-house innovation are becoming increasingly important parts of that model.

This transformation has emerged as one of the key themes of the 140th China Import and Export Fair, widely known as the Canton Fair. Across the exhibition halls, familiar products such as power tools, household appliances and industrial equipment are increasingly incorporating artificial intelligence, machine vision, automated control and digital connectivity.

One example presented at the fair is a smart drilling system that uses machine vision to automatically determine its position and control exactly where and how deep to drill. Other companies are demonstrating robotic solutions capable of performing tasks that previously required direct human involvement.

Such products point to a broader shift in Chinese manufacturing. Companies are increasingly seeking to compete not only through price and production volume, but also through functionality, technology and higher added value.

The scale of this transformation is also reflected in trade figures. In the first three quarters of 2026, China's trade in advanced manufacturing and technology products — including industrial robots, electronic components, computer parts and electrical equipment — exceeded 10 trillion yuan, or around 1.5 trillion U.S. dollars. The figure was up 58.9 percent year on year.

The relationship between Chinese manufacturers and overseas companies is changing as well. Foreign buyers are no longer coming to the Canton Fair simply to purchase finished goods. Many are visiting factories, meeting suppliers and discussing the joint development of new products.

Johann Anton Klimmer, managing director of Germany-based Rothenberger Group, said his company continuously develops products together with its factories in China, involving research and development teams in both Shanghai and Europe.

The traditional model in which China primarily served as a manufacturing base for global markets is therefore becoming more complex. Production is increasingly being combined with joint research, product development and technological cooperation.

The scale of international interest is also evident at the Canton Fair. Around 189,000 overseas buyers from 214 countries and regions attended the first phase of the event, a record and an increase of 13.3 percent from the same period of the previous session.

Russian buyer Dmitry Ikonnikov, who first attended the fair in 2006, noted that China's product landscape has changed significantly over the past two decades, with buyers from around the world increasingly coming in search of new and distinctive solutions.

The Canton Fair therefore illustrates the intersection of two development models. The first helped establish China as one of the world's largest manufacturing bases. The second places greater emphasis on technology, joint innovation and higher-value products for global markets.

If this trend continues, the role of Chinese manufacturing in the global economy will be defined less by production volumes alone. The ability to develop new technologies, turn innovation rapidly into mass-market products and connect manufacturing with international research and markets will become increasingly important.

According to CCTV+, the technologies showcased at the Canton Fair demonstrate the shift of Chinese manufacturing from predominantly mass production toward a smarter and more technology-driven model.
