Trump says large-scale oil, gas and mineral exploration is being prepared in Greenland
U.S. President Donald Trump said Wednesday that large-scale exploration for oil, gas and minerals is being prepared in Greenland, though he provided no specific reserve estimates or details on future projects.
Writing on Truth Social, Trump said some experts believe Greenland may hold an exceptionally large amount of accessible oil. He also again emphasized the island's strategic importance for the defense of the United States and Europe.
His remarks came several weeks after the United States, Denmark and Greenland signed an agreement expanding the U.S. military presence on the island, including provisions for new military facilities and broader defense infrastructure.
However, the agreement does not grant the United States special rights to Greenland's natural resources. Danish authorities said any exploration or extraction projects must comply with Greenlandic law.
Greenland's resources have drawn renewed attention amid continued instability in global energy markets and persistent risks to fuel supplies.
According to CCTV+, Trump's statement has renewed focus on Greenland's energy and strategic importance, although specific plans for future resource exploration have not yet been disclosed.
