UN warns of deepening humanitarian crisis in Yemen
Continued fighting and large-scale displacement are worsening the humanitarian crisis in Yemen, particularly in Taiz governorate, the UN Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs said Monday.
According to the International Organization for Migration, around 216,000 people have been displaced nationwide since the beginning of August, including more than 172,000 from Taiz alone.
The United Nations and its humanitarian partners had provided emergency assistance to around 143,000 people by Monday, including food, hygiene kits and cash support. However, rising needs, access restrictions and limited resources continue to hamper relief efforts.
The situation in Taiz is of particular concern, where restrictions on key roads are disrupting civilian movement, commercial supplies and humanitarian access. Road closures, including along the Taiz-Aden route, have affected the availability of food, fuel, water and medical supplies and contributed to rising prices.
The UN said inadequate shelter, poor sanitation, food insecurity and limited healthcare access are increasing risks for displaced women and girls. Funding cuts have also forced the closure of 72 percent of safe spaces for women and girls across Yemen.
Civilian casualties are also rising. Since the start of August, at least 54 civilians have been killed, half of them children, while another 171 people have been injured, including 107 women and children.
According to CCTV+, the UN continues to coordinate humanitarian assistance and is calling on all parties to respect international humanitarian law, protect civilians and civilian infrastructure, and ensure safe and unimpeded humanitarian access.
