The 91st Paris Motor Show opened in the French capital on Monday, with a record number of Chinese automakers taking part as they seek to expand their presence in the European market.

The week-long event has brought together more than 100 exhibitors and over 60 automakers from Europe, America and Asia, with Chinese brands enjoying a much stronger presence than at previous editions.

A total of 25 Chinese brands represented by 16 automakers, including BYD, XPeng, Changan, Dongfeng and Leapmotor, are participating — roughly double the number seen at the 2024 show.

Electric vehicles, hybrid models and new technologies are among the main highlights. Chinese manufacturers are pursuing different strategies, from affordability and premium vehicles to faster charging solutions. For European buyers, key concerns remain vehicle prices, repair and maintenance costs, battery performance and charging speed.

XPeng has already been expanding its local presence in Europe through a partnership with Magna to produce vehicles in Austria and the opening of a research and development center in Munich. The company says tariff or policy changes will not alter its long-term European strategy.

Major European brands including Citroen, Peugeot, Renault, Audi and Volkswagen are also presenting new models, with electric mobility, intelligent driving and innovative transport solutions among the show's key themes.

According to CCTV+, the growing presence of Chinese automakers at the Paris Motor Show reflects their efforts to establish a stronger long-term position in the European auto market.
