Gas pipeline blast knocks three power plants offline near Damascus
A gas pipeline explosion in the Damascus countryside forced three power plants offline, adding new pressure to electricity supplies in the Syrian capital and surrounding areas.
The Deir Ali, Nasiriyah and Tishreen plants were taken out of service after a pipeline supplying the Tishreen thermal power station was damaged. The Syrian Electricity Company said the incident reduced available generation capacity and temporarily increased power rationing.
Deir Ali and Nasiriyah later returned to service after gas supplies were restored. The Tishreen plant remains offline because of damage to equipment and gas infrastructure, with technical inspections and repairs still under way.
Economic expert Yahya Rakaj said the disruption directly affects households, transport and industrial activity, while repairs place additional pressure on government resources.
The cause of the explosion has not yet been officially determined. Authorities are continuing their investigation while technical teams assess the damage.
According to CCTV+, the incident has placed renewed strain on Syria's energy infrastructure. Restoring the Tishreen plant and stabilizing electricity supplies remain the main priorities.
