Xi Jinping’s U.S. state visit: China and the United States chart new substance for bilateral ties
Chinese President Xi Jinping’s recently concluded state visit to the United States marked a significant moment in the history of China-U.S. relations. Over several days, the two leaders took part in a series of official events and discussions, outlining an approach to bilateral ties based on respect, fairness, mutuality and strategic stability.
Xi Jinping visited the United States from Wednesday to Friday at the invitation of U.S. President Donald Trump. The visit came several months after Trump’s state visit to China in May. The two presidents therefore exchanged state visits within less than six months.
During the visit, Xi and Trump held candid and in-depth exchanges on bilateral relations and international issues. The two sides agreed to give new substance to China-U.S. relations by building a constructive relationship of strategic stability based on respect, fairness and mutuality.
On Wednesday afternoon, Xi Jinping and his wife, Peng Liyuan, were warmly welcomed by Donald and Melania Trump after arriving at Joint Base Andrews. The welcome ceremony featured a 21-gun salute, the national anthems of China and the United States, and a flyover by military aircraft.
“I am visiting the United States at the invitation of President Trump to continue our friendship, expand cooperation and promote the well-being of the peoples of both countries,” Xi said at the arrival ceremony.
He noted that the interests of China and the United States are deeply intertwined and that the two countries have many opportunities to work together. Xi said China-U.S. cooperation may not solve all the world’s problems, but without cooperation between the two countries, many global problems would be difficult to resolve.
“China and the United States should uphold the principle of no conflict and no confrontation between us, and we can certainly find the right way for our two great countries to get along on this planet we both call home,” Xi said. On Thursday morning, Trump held an official welcome ceremony for Xi at the White House. Following their remarks, Xi and Trump, accompanied by their wives, stepped onto a balcony overlooking the South Lawn to watch a performance by a silent drill platoon of the U.S. Marine Corps.
The two presidential couples then proceeded to the Rose Garden for a military review and performances by military bands. Several fighter aircraft also flew over the White House in honor of the Chinese and U.S. presidents and their wives.
Following the welcome ceremony, Xi and Trump held a meeting in the Oval Office. Later that evening, Xi and Peng attended a welcome banquet hosted by Trump and Melania Trump at the White House. On the final day of the visit, Xi and Peng had tea with Donald and Melania Trump at the White House. The two presidential couples also visited the U.S. National Archives in Washington.
Xi Jinping concluded his state visit on Friday and departed Washington in a formal farewell ceremony accompanied by senior U.S. officials. The departure ceremony also included a 21-gun salute.
