Trump hosts White House banquet for Xi Jinping, expresses hope for peaceful and prosperous future

A state banquet at the White House marked another major event in the diplomatic program of Chinese President Xi Jinping’s state visit to the United States. U.S. President Donald Trump hosted a formal banquet at the White House on Thursday in honor of Chinese President Xi Jinping, raising a toast to the longstanding relationship between the United States and China and wishing the peoples of both countries a future filled with harmony, peace and prosperity.

At Trump’s invitation, Xi is visiting the United States for a state visit from Wednesday through Friday. The visit came only months after Trump’s state visit to China in May.

In his remarks, Trump welcomed Xi, Peng Liyuan and members of the Chinese delegation to the White House, saying that he and First Lady Melania Trump were pleased to receive them again. Trump also spoke of the hospitality extended by the Chinese people during his visit to Beijing earlier this year.

“I would like to raise a final glass to President Xi Jinping, Mrs. Peng, and the long relationship between China and America, which has crossed thousands of miles and lasted for hundreds of years. And may all our peoples know a future filled with harmony, peace and success,” Trump said.

The event was also attended by prominent figures from the U.S. business and technology sectors, including Tesla CEO Elon Musk, Amazon founder Jeff Bezos and NVIDIA CEO Jensen Huang.
