Xi Jinping in written statement: China and the United States should be partners, not rivals

Chinese President Xi Jinping’s written statement upon his arrival in the United States outlines his approach to the next stage of China-U.S. relations. Chinese President Xi Jinping said China and the United States should be partners, not rivals. In a written statement upon his arrival in the United States for a state visit, Xi extended sincere greetings and best wishes to the American people on behalf of the Chinese people.

Xi noted that China and the United States are both major countries and that their peoples have maintained friendly exchanges for a long time. He said the interests of the two countries are deeply intertwined. The Chinese president said the great rejuvenation of the Chinese nation and making America great again can go hand in hand, complement each other and benefit the world.

Xi said this year is a crucial one for the development of both China and the United States. He recalled that during U.S. President Donald Trump’s visit to China in May, the two sides agreed to build a constructive China-U.S. relationship of strategic stability, providing strategic guidance for the future development of bilateral ties.

China and the United States should work in the same direction and promote a stable relationship featuring cooperation as the mainstay, moderate competition, manageable differences and a commitment to peace, Xi said. He stressed that the two major countries should find the right way to coexist in the new era. Although the world is changing and times are evolving, Xi said, the historical logic of peaceful coexistence between China and the United States, the goodwill of their peoples toward friendly exchanges and the international community’s general expectations for the two countries have not changed.

Xi said he looked forward to in-depth exchanges with Trump on major issues concerning bilateral relations and the international situation. He said the two sides should continue to enrich the substance of their constructive relationship of strategic stability and broaden opportunities for exchanges and cooperation across various fields.

Xi also said he looked forward to engaging extensively with people from all walks of life in the United States in order to deepen friendship between the two peoples.

With joint efforts from both sides, Xi said he believed his visit to the United States would achieve fruitful results, enhance the well-being of the two peoples and bring hope for world peace.
