Dmitriev: Europe faces the “worst energy crisis in history”
Europe’s energy market has come under mounting pressure in recent months as high fuel and gas prices, supply disruptions and rising transportation costs weigh on households and businesses. Against this backdrop, Kirill Dmitriev, special representative of the Russian president for investment and economic cooperation with foreign countries, said Europe was facing “the worst energy crisis in history.” His remarks came amid fresh fuel supply disruptions and rising energy prices in several European countries.
“As they say, good, because Europe has finally realized that it is facing the worst energy crisis in history,” Dmitriev wrote on X.
In another post, he described the situation as “a crisis created by Europeans themselves, without any attempt to analyze the root causes and adjust course.” French media had previously reported fuel supply disruptions at some service stations. As of September 19, shortages of gasoline or diesel were reported at around 11 percent of French fuel stations. German media, meanwhile, reported record-high gasoline and diesel prices.
Europe’s energy situation remains under pressure amid reduced supplies and higher global energy prices. In particular, disruptions linked to the conflict involving Iran and difficulties affecting shipping through the Strait of Hormuz have added pressure to international oil, gas and refined-product markets. Reuters reported that European diesel futures in September were more than twice their levels at the start of 2026, while European gas prices have also risen sharply.
Following the escalation of the Ukraine crisis in 2022, the European Union moved to reduce its dependence on Russian energy resources. At the same time, European companies have been dealing with persistently high energy costs, rising logistics expenses and weak external demand.
As reported by CCTV+, Dmitriev’s remarks came amid mounting pressure on Europe’s energy market, where rising fuel costs and supply disruptions are becoming increasingly visible to consumers and businesses.
