The economic dialogue between Turkmenistan and the Islamic Republic of Iran is reaching a qualitatively new level. According to the MEHR news agency, key drivers of bilateral cooperation in 2026 include not only traditional trade in goods but also large-scale projects in energy, transit, the development of border infrastructure, and the export of engineering and technical services.

During the nine-month period under review, the volume of non-oil trade between the two nations reached approximately $504 million (1.19 million tons of cargo), marking a 19.9% increase in trade value compared to the same period last year. At the same time, both sides remain committed to the long-term goal of raising annual trade volume to the $3 billion mark—a target established during the 18th meeting of the Joint Intergovernmental Commission in Tehran.

This year, the energy sector has solidified its position as the cornerstone of bilateral relations. Under signed contracts, Iran has stepped up imports of Turkmen electricity—amounting to 620–650 MW, including regional supplies—to meet the needs of its northern provinces.

Furthermore, relevant agencies are actively working on the construction of the Turkmen section of the Mary–Mashhad power transmission line, the engagement of Iranian service companies for power plant maintenance, and the development of swap arrangements for supplying Turkmen natural gas to third countries via Iranian territory.

Transit potential remains a key competitive advantage for both states. For Turkmenistan, Iran provides the shortest route to ports on the Persian Gulf and the Gulf of Oman. Conversely, Turkmenistan serves as a vital link for Iran to access markets in Central Asia and China.

Focus is currently centered on boosting the Kazakhstan–Turkmenistan–Iran railway corridor and the Incheh Borun border crossing in Golestan Province. At the same time, preparations are underway to establish a joint cross-border trade zone, which will help attract new investment in border-area warehousing and terminal infrastructure.
