Belarus breeds new high-yield wheat variety “Karta”
Belarusian scientists from the Scientific and Practical Center for Arable Farming have bred a new variety of spring soft wheat named “Karta,” BELTA reports.
The variety was created using molecular-genetic methods, which made it possible to combine a high yield and excellent grain quality in a single plant.
The yield of “Karta” reaches 86 centners per hectare. The grain features high vitreousness (88%), guaranteeing top-grade flour production. Due to the increased protein content (14.7%) and gluten (31.8%), the dough turns out elastic, while baked goods and pasta retain their shape and do not fall apart during cooking. This makes the new variety an ideal raw material for the confectionery and pasta industries.
In addition to its high food properties, “Karta” is resilient to weather fluctuations and does not lodge under strong winds or heavy rains. Sturdy stems protect the crop from rotting and facilitate lossless harvesting by combines.
