An Open-Air Symphony of Good Neighborliness – Ashgabat Celebrated the 35th Anniversary of Uzbekistan's Independence
On the evening of September 4, the capital's Tashkent Park, a symbol and architectural embodiment of Turkmen-Uzbek brotherhood, became the epicenter of a heartfelt celebration. In an atmosphere of genuine warmth, a gala reception was held there to mark the 35th anniversary of the state independence of the Republic of Uzbekistan, bringing together representatives of the diplomatic corps, government agencies, business circles, and the creative intelligentsia.
At the main entrance, guests were greeted by the powerful, rolling sound of karnays. Their deep sounds intertwined with the ornate rhythms of percussion instruments, setting the pace for a truly Eastern celebration.
The boundaries between a strict protocol reception and a folk festival blurred from the very first minutes: diplomats from various countries and officials eagerly donned traditional Uzbek skullcaps, which seamlessly complemented both classic business suits and national attire.
The park was immersed in the atmosphere of legendary Uzbek hospitality, with its breadth and generosity. Guests explored extensive displays of decorative and applied arts, featuring gold embroidery, exquisite ceramics, and national fabrics with unique patterns.
The aromas of freshly baked naan and traditional flatbreads, wafting through the alleys and anticipating the evening's culinary climax, became an integral part of the festive atmosphere.
The official part of the reception opened with a speech by Ravshanbek Alimov, Ambassador of the Republic of Uzbekistan to Turkmenistan. In his speech, the diplomat emphasized that independence is the highest value and the fundamental basis for independently determining the destiny of the people. Summarizing the 35-year journey, the head of the diplomatic mission noted the large-scale reforms being implemented under the leadership of President Shavkat Mirziyoyev as part of building a "New Uzbekistan," where the principle of protecting human interests and dignity is paramount.
Particular emphasis was placed on transforming Central Asia into a space of trust and sustainable growth, as well as on the strategic nature of relations with Turkmenistan, mutual trade turnover of which has already exceeded $1.2 billion, with potential to reach $2 billion.
On behalf of the Government of Turkmenistan, Deputy Chairman of the Cabinet of Ministers of Turkmenistan Khodjamyrat Geldymuradov congratulated the fraternal people of Uzbekistan on their independence anniversary. In his address, the Deputy Prime Minister emphasized the high dynamics of economic cooperation, noting that mutual trade grew by almost 60% by the end of 2025, and by a further 18% in the first seven months of this year, reaching approximately $800 million.
It was particularly noted that Uzbekistan firmly holds fourth place in Turkmenistan's foreign trade turnover, and the launch of the Shavat-Dashoguz border trade zone and the work of the Business Council provide additional impetus to interregional cooperation.
The official part gave way to a rich concert program, in which artists performed popular pop and classical folk compositions. Live music and vibrant oriental rhythms united those present in festive dances, cementing an atmosphere of sincere, informal communication. The evening concluded with a traditional dastarkhan, the highlight of which was the famous Uzbek pilaf.
The culinary mastery of the chefs and the rich flavors of the national cuisine provided a harmonious backdrop to this festive evening. The fragrant aromas of spices and leisurely conversation over a cup of tea naturally continued the diplomatic dialogue, elevating it to a dimension of genuine human warmth.
This evening in Ashgabat's Tashkent Park once again proved that the union of the two states is based not only on trade figures and intergovernmental agreements, but also on deep mutual respect, shared cultural roots, and that special, undeniable spiritual affinity that transforms neighborliness into a strong and enduring brotherhood.
