Today, August 28, a meeting was held in Ashgabat between Turkmenistan’s Minister of Education Jumamyrat Gurbangeldiyev and Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary of the Republic of Korea to Turkmenistan Lee Won-jae. During the talks, the sides discussed in detail the current state and promising areas for developing bilateral cooperation in the scientific and educational sphere. This was reported by the Ministry of Education of Turkmenistan.

At present, the legal framework for bilateral cooperation in education comprises around 20 interdepartmental agreements and memorandums of understanding. New important documents are planned to be signed within the framework of the First Summit “Central Asia – Republic of Korea”, which will be held in Seoul in September this year.

The Korean side highly praised the quality of Korean-language teaching at the Dovletmammet Azadi Turkmen National Institute of World Languages and at Specialized Secondary School No. 88 in Ashgabat.

It was particularly noted that the King Sejong Institute at the Turkmen National Institute of World Languages has been recognized as the most exemplary center within the global network, while the Information Accessibility Center under the Innovation and Information Center of the Ministry of Education of Turkmenistan was named the best center based on the results of 2024.

Special attention during the meeting was devoted to developing academic exchanges with Kangwon National University. In summer 2026, students from the two countries successfully completed reciprocal internships, while in the 2026–2027 academic year, three students from the Turkmen language university were sent to Korea for one year of study.

During the meeting, proposals were put forward to attract Korean teachers, jointly prepare students for academic Olympiads, publish scientific works, and organize round-table discussions on digital education.

In addition, in 2026–2027, the material and technical facilities of Magtymguly Turkmen State University and the Dovletmammet Azadi Turkmen National Institute of World Languages will be modernized through small grants from the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the Republic of Korea.

At the conclusion of the meeting, the sides reaffirmed their readiness to further expand the fruitful dialogue for the benefit of the two friendly states.
