Turkmenistan and PETRONAS Expand Student Programmes
On August 21, a meeting was held in Ashgabat between Turkmenistan’s Minister of Education Jumamyrat Gurbangeldiyev, Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary of Malaysia to Turkmenistan Mohd Suhaimi bin Ahmad Tajuddin, and the management of Petronas Çarigali (Turkmenistan).
The meeting, held at the Ministry of Education of Turkmenistan, was attended by Minister of Education Jumamyrat Gurbangeldiyev, Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary of Malaysia to Turkmenistan Mohd Suhaimi bin Ahmad Tajuddin, and a delegation of Petronas Çarigali (Turkmenistan) Sdn. Bhd., headed by its Managing Director Ismadi bin Ismail.
During the talks, the parties discussed the current state and prospects for further development of bilateral cooperation, with particular attention paid to the training of highly qualified specialists for the oil and gas sector.
The main event of the meeting was the signing of a Memorandum of Understanding between the Ministry of Education of Turkmenistan and PETRONAS Çarigali (Turkmenistan) Sdn. Bhd. The signing was timed to coincide with the 30th anniversary of the Malaysian company’s cooperation with Turkmenistan in the fuel and energy sector.
The long-standing activities of PETRONAS are a clear example of mutually beneficial partnership. The company regularly provides scholarships for Turkmen youth to study at the prestigious Universiti Teknologi PETRONAS in Malaysia. It was also noted with pride that the National Leader of the Turkmen people, Hero-Arkadag Gurbanguly Berdimuhamedov, is an honorary doctor of the university.
To date, around 20 documents have been signed between the two countries in the field of education. In June this year, within the framework of the visit of the Prime Minister of Malaysia to Turkmenistan and the international conference “Turkmenistan–Malaysia: 30 Years of Mutually Beneficial Cooperation in the Oil and Gas Sector,” three agreements were concluded between Turkmen higher education institutions and the National Energy University of Malaysia on student exchange and academic mobility programmes.
In addition, a Memorandum involving the International University of Oil and Gas named after Yagshygeldi Kakaev, PETRONAS and Universiti Teknologi PETRONAS is actively being implemented. Under this framework, teachers and students regularly undertake professional development courses in Malaysia.
The newly signed document will create conditions for implementing new joint projects and expand opportunities for the professional development of young people. At the conclusion of the meeting, the parties expressed confidence that the objectives set out in the Memorandum would be successfully implemented in practice in the near future.
