Trump hints at possible resumption of talks with Iran, calls situation «very good»

On Wednesday, US President Donald Trump suggested that negotiations with Tehran could resume “at some point”, saying the situation with Iran is “very good”.

In diplomacy, as in life, words often diverge from actions. When one side speaks of readiness for dialogue while simultaneously tightening a blockade and denying that talks are taking place, the world watches a game where the rules change daily. The Strait of Hormuz, caught in the geopolitical crossfire, reminds us that behind every statement lie not only political ambitions but also the fates of millions of people who depend on stable energy routes.

“Right now, I think the situation is very good,” Trump told reporters, reiterating his claim that the United States “owns” and “fully controls” the Strait of Hormuz, which was effectively closed shortly after the US and Israel launched a large scale military campaign against Iran on 28 February. Trump also reaffirmed that Washington’s priority is to prevent Iran from developing nuclear weapons.

On Tuesday, CNN reported, citing US officials, that Trump had instructed his negotiating team to halt talks with Iran. On Tuesday, Trump announced on social media that “no negotiations or discussions are taking place or planned” between the United States and Iran, as the US naval blockade “remains in full effect”.

The conflict over the Strait of Hormuz, through which about 30% of global seaborne oil passes, escalated on 28 February when the US and Israel launched a military operation against Iran in response to its nuclear programme. Since then, the strait has been effectively closed to commercial shipping, leading to a spike in energy prices and heightened uncertainty in global markets. Washington insists on the complete dismantling of Tehran’s nuclear infrastructure, while Iran demands the lifting of sanctions and recognition of its right to peaceful nuclear energy. Despite conflicting signals from the White House, both sides maintain a military presence in the region, and diplomatic channels remain blocked.

As CCTV+ reports, Trump’s statements about a possible resumption of talks come against the backdrop of an ongoing naval blockade and a lack of real contacts between the parties. The world is waiting for actions, not words – but for now, the Strait of Hormuz remains closed, and the fate of the nuclear deal is uncertain. In the coming weeks, it will become clear whether these signals are the start of a diplomatic breakthrough or just another tactical move in a prolonged standoff.
