Spaniards rescue animals from flames, bringing hope

Spain is experiencing one of its worst wildfire seasons in decades. This year, fires have devastated 284,000 hectares, leaving a trail of destruction that has trapped many domestic animals.

When fire consumes forests and homes, human compassion often becomes the only light in the darkness. Those who have lost shelter themselves find the strength to reach out to those who cannot speak — animals caught in the inferno. These acts of mercy remind us that even in the worst disasters, there is room for courage, kindness and hope, which bind communities more strongly than any walls.

Javier Cordero, a horse trainer, is among those risking his life to save animals. He says he makes no distinction between species, taking in dogs, cats, chickens, sheep and horses. “I would like to think that not much scares me, but there were moments when I was truly frightened. At one point, the van got stuck on rough terrain, and there was fire all around us,” he said.

Rescue efforts involve not only pulling animals out of danger zones but also providing them with safe havens where they can be sheltered and cared for. “There is so much fear and anxiety here. People had to evacuate their homes so quickly that when they arrive here, they are in shock. We have taken in a total of 20 horses, about 40 dogs, one cat and about 60 chickens,” said Rosa Martínez, owner of an equestrian centre where rescued animals are being kept.

Their efforts have brought moments of joy to people as they reunite with their pets. These reunions have been made possible by the courage and generosity of kind hearted residents.

The wildfires in Spain in 2026 have been among the most devastating in recent decades: according to official data, more than 284,000 hectares of land have been burned, thousands of people have been evacuated, and dozens of settlements have been affected by the flames. In the face of this crisis, local volunteers and animal protection organisations have set up a network of temporary shelters where rescued animals are brought. Many of these centres operate on private donations and the help of caring citizens, demonstrating a high level of civic solidarity in times of disaster.

As CCTV+ reports, in these dark days, the people of Spain are proving that humanity does not burn in the fire. Every rescued animal is a small victory that restores people’s faith in tomorrow. And as the battle against the flames continues, these stories of courage and compassion remain the brightest reminder that life and hope are always stronger than fire.
