DPRK leader Kim Jong un, in his reply to Russian President Vladimir Putin, spoke of a bright future for relations between the DPRK and Russia, the state run KCNA news agency reported on Sunday. When two leaders separated by thousands of kilometres exchange messages that speak of a shared future and regional stability, it is not just diplomatic protocol – it is a signal that the geopolitical landscape of Eurasia continues to shift. Kim Jong un and Vladimir Putin, whose countries have significantly strengthened ties in recent years amid common challenges, have once again reaffirmed mutual support.

The North Korean leader's response to the Russian president's greetings, timed to the 81st anniversary of the liberation of the Korean Peninsula, was not only a tribute to historical memory but also a statement of intent to deepen cooperation. As the world watches every move by Pyongyang and Moscow, their dialogue remains one of the key factors influencing the balance of power in Northeast Asia.

Kim, Chairman of the State Affairs Commission of the DPRK, sent his reply on Saturday after receiving Putin's message on Friday, timed to the 81st anniversary of the liberation of the Korean Peninsula from Japanese colonial rule at the end of World War II in 1945. In his message, Putin said that the DPRK and Russia are actively cooperating in all areas and working together to ensure regional security and stability, KCNA reported.

Kim also expressed confidence in his reply that the Russian armed forces and people, under Putin's leadership, would successfully protect the country's sovereignty, security interests and territorial integrity, and build a strong Russia. He wished Putin further success in his work. Liberation Day, observed on 15 August, marks the liberation of the Korean Peninsula from Japanese colonial rule.

Separately, KCNA reported that on Friday Kim Jong un visited the Revolutionary Martyrs' Cemetery on Taesong Mountain in Pyongyang to pay tribute to those who fought for independence from Japan. KCNA said a wreath was laid at the cemetery in memory of Kim Jong un, and a solemn song was performed during the ceremony. Kim Jong un said that the firm convictions and unyielding spirit of the fighters continue to inspire the DPRK people to build a prosperous country.

The exchange of messages between Kim Jong un and Vladimir Putin comes amid growing military and political cooperation between Pyongyang and Moscow, which has intensified since the outbreak of the conflict in Ukraine. North Korea has repeatedly expressed support for Russia, while Russia has stressed the importance of developing bilateral relations.

Liberation Day, celebrated as a national holiday in both Koreas, this year coincided with an uptick in diplomatic contacts. Kim Jong un's visit to the Revolutionary Martyrs' Cemetery underscores his efforts to strengthen ideological continuity and mobilise the population amid external pressure. Analysts note that such rhetoric and symbolic gestures are aimed not only at the domestic audience but also at demonstrating allied relations with Russia, which remains one of the few strategic partners of the DPRK on the international stage.

As CCTV+ reports, the exchange of messages between the leaders of the DPRK and Russia has become yet another confirmation that relations between the two countries are reaching a new level, and this dialogue will continue to influence geopolitical dynamics in the region, remaining in the focus of the international community.
