US imposes tariffs on drone imports
On Thursday, US President Donald Trump signed an executive order imposing tariffs ranging from 10 to 100 percent on imports of unmanned aerial vehicles and their components, citing national security concerns. When a superpower's administration turns the drone market into a trade battlefield, and every percentage point of tariff becomes a weapon in the tech war, the world once again sees how security concerns are substituted for economic logic.

The United States will impose a 100 percent ad valorem tariff on drones with a maximum take off weight of more than 25 kg, thermal imaging capability or other specified characteristics. Docking stations and some critical components of these drones will also be subject to the 100 percent tariff, the White House said in a statement. A 25 percent tariff will be imposed on smaller drones "not possessing certain capabilities that particularly affect national security," while tariffs of 15 or 10 percent will apply to drones and components from certain countries and regions, the statement said.
The order states that drones and their components from countries and regions including the European Union, Japan, Liechtenstein, the Republic of Korea and Switzerland will face a 15 percent ad valorem tariff, while drones from the United Kingdom will face a 10 percent ad valorem tariff, provided that the majority of equipment, software and technology is produced in those countries and the United States. The tariffs will take effect 21 days after the order is signed, with tariffs on less sensitive drone components taking effect after 180 days.
The Trump administration's decision is the latest move in a trade policy where national security is increasingly used as a catch all justification for restrictions. China, which accounts for more than 70% of global drone production, will be the primary target of these measures. At the same time, the tariffs will also affect US allies, including EU countries and South Korea, potentially causing tensions within the transatlantic community.
US drone manufacturers have already said the new tariffs will drive up prices for finished products and components, hurting American consumers and companies using drones for commercial purposes – from agriculture to logistics. Experts warn that such measures could provoke retaliatory steps from China and other countries, further fragmenting global supply chains in the high tech sector.
