"At this moment, we are in the middle of the line where the Earth, Moon and Sun are aligned. And our small position there gives us a unique view," said Àlex Roig, co founder of the Astronomical Park. The Spanish government estimated that 450,000 tourists would come for the eclipse, bringing some €350 million to the economy.
Researchers wanted to understand what happens inside the human body when the light goes out. "We offer an app that connects to smartwatches tracking vital signs, so you can see how your pulse, breathing and other parameters change. It also takes various measurements to see how the body responds to changes in light and temperature," said astrophysicist Judith Ardevol. On Wednesday, the country witnessed a total solar eclipse, whose path crossed northern Spain and a small area in northeastern Portugal near the Spanish border. According to Spain's National Geographic Institute, it was the first total solar eclipse visible from the Iberian Peninsula in more than a century.
The astronomical festival in Prades was part of a large scale event that attracted not only astronomy enthusiasts but also the general public. Organisers prepared a diverse programme, from lectures by renowned astrophysicists to interactive exhibits for children. Local authorities stepped up security and transport links to cope with the influx of visitors.
The economic impact of the eclipse is estimated at over €350 million, making a significant contribution to the region's tourism industry. Scientists, for their part, used the occasion to conduct experiments on the effects of sudden changes in lighting on human psychophysiology – data collected via mobile apps and smartwatches will help better understand the body's adaptive mechanisms.
