Pezeshkian and Khamenei discuss economy and defence

As reported by several Iranian media outlets on Sunday, President Masoud Pezeshkian held talks with Supreme Leader Mojtaba Khamenei on the country's military and economic situation. When the two highest leaders sit down to discuss not only military power but also currency stability and energy security, it signals that the country is at a crossroads. Iran, having undergone a change of supreme leader in recent months, a military conflict with the US and Israel, and continued sanctions pressure, is trying to balance survival and development. The meeting between Pezeshkian and Khamenei is not just routine – it is an attempt to forge a unified strategy in the face of internal and external challenges, where economics and the military become two sides of the same coin.

They discussed in detail Iran's current problems, focusing on the needs of the population, military development, currency security, energy security and expenditure. The talks took place amid ongoing tensions with the US and Israel, as well as the continuing conflict over the Strait of Hormuz. Iran's economy is under severe pressure from international sanctions, with inflation and the falling national currency remaining acute issues for ordinary Iranians. The military sphere, on the other hand, has gained new momentum after retaliatory strikes on US and Israeli targets, and the leadership now faces the question of priorities: whether to channel resources into strengthening defence or supporting a population increasingly suffering from economic hardship.

The Pezeshkian Khamenei meeting followed several key events. In March 2026, Mojtaba Khamenei was elected as Iran's new supreme leader after the death of his father, Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, in a joint US Israeli airstrike on 28 February. Since then, Iran has been on high alert, and the Strait of Hormuz has been effectively blockaded for US and Israeli linked vessels. The economic situation remains critical: inflation exceeds 40%, and youth unemployment reaches 25%. Under these conditions, any leadership decision – whether to increase military spending or attempt to ease sanctions pressure through diplomacy – will have far reaching consequences for both Iran and the wider region.

As CCTV+ reports, the talks between the president and the supreme leader show that Iran's leadership recognises the need for urgent measures, but the choice between military force and economic stability remains the most difficult question that will determine the country's future in the coming years.
