In the winter of 1897, the harsh and desolate shore of the Garabogazkol Gulf became the arena for events that forever changed the perception of the Turkmen land's wealth. What began as a routine scientific wintering turned into the discovery of a world-scale treasure.

The Mysterious "Snow" in the Desert

It all began with a storm. North-easterly winds drove massive waves across the gulf, crashing them onto the sandy shores. When the storm finally subsided, the expedition members aboard the gunboat "Krasnovodsk" — led by scientists I. B. Spindler, A. O. Ostroumov, and N. I. Andrusov — witnessed something extraordinary. The entire coastline was covered in a thick, dazzlingly white layer resembling freshly fallen snow. Yet, to the touch, it was not ice at all. Subsequent chemical analysis revealed that the cold waves had washed ashore pure crystals of “mirabilite” — a mineral more commonly known as “Glauber's salt”. Mirabilite is an exceptionally sensitive salt, consisting of nearly 50% water by weight. In summer, it remains dissolved in the gulf's waters. However, as winter temperatures drop, Garabogazkol can no longer hold the mineral in solution, pushing it onto dry land in natural drifts 30 to 35 centimeters thick.

A Sensation from St. Petersburg to Europe

Until that moment, Garabogaz had been regarded as a gloomy and barren area. However, the expedition's findings proved that the gulf was not merely a body of water, but a gigantic natural chemical factory. In August 1897, at the International Geological Congress in St. Petersburg, the expedition's results hit like a bombshell. Anhydrous sodium sulfate derived from mirabilite proved vital for global industries:

In glass manufacturing: It successfully replaced expensive soda ash;

In textile and leather industries: It became an indispensable reagent for dyeing and tanning;

In chemical synthesis: It paved the way for manufacturing ultramarine and cellulose.

By the 1910s, European industrialists were actively seeking access to Turkmen mirabilite, realizing that the key to multi-million-dollar manufacturing lay along the shores of Garabogaz. Yet one final puzzle remained: how to transport a mineral half of whose weight was plain water? Shipping "wet" salt over thousands of kilometers was economically impractical. The solution was found right on site: engineers developed methods to dehydrate mirabilite directly in the desert climate. This laid the foundation for the "Karabogazsulfat" industrial complex, turning the region into a major chemical hub.
