Apple Is Developing Camera-Equipped AirPods: Release Could Come as Early as This Fall
Apple is preparing to make another breakthrough in the world of gadgets by adding cameras and artificial intelligence to AirPods. Experts previously expected the technology to arrive only in 2027, but the new device, codenamed B790, could reportedly be unveiled at Apple’s fall presentation.
What is known about the development?
According to Bloomberg analyst Mark Gurman, Apple is developing two versions of the technologically advanced earbuds at the same time:
• B790 — a model that is ready for release. Developers have already found references to it in the code of the iOS operating system;
• B798 — a more advanced version, whose development is expected to take several more years.
Why Do the Earbuds Need Cameras?
The cameras in the AirPods are intended to support Apple’s artificial intelligence system. The earbuds could scan the surrounding environment and help users with navigation, object recognition, and real-time contextual prompts.
Design and Safety
In terms of appearance, the AirPods are expected to retain their familiar design, but they may feature longer stems to accommodate the sensors. To prevent covert recording, Apple is expected to add LED indicators that will light up when the cameras are active and transmitting data to the cloud.
