Turkmen Scientists Participate in the International Ethnographic Expedition “Greater Altai: Turkic Heritage 2026”
On August 10, the international ethnographic expedition “Greater Altai: Turkic Heritage 2026” began in the Altai Krai and the Altai Republic of the Russian Federation. The expedition is being held as part of the international scientific and educational project of Altai State University, “The Turkic World of Greater Altai: Unity and Diversity in History and the Present” (“Greater Altai”). The project brings together researchers from Russia and Central Asia to study the shared history, culture, and traditions of Turkic peoples.
Ayna Baymuradova, a PhD candidate at the Academy of Sciences of Turkmenistan and Candidate of Historical Sciences, and Toyly Hommyyev, a lecturer at the Department of History of Turkmenistan at Magtymguly Turkmen State University also participate in the expedition.
Before the expedition began, the participants met with Sergey Bocharov, Rector of Altai State University. The rector emphasized that over the years, the “Greater Altai” project has developed into a major international initiative that has attracted researchers from various countries, and wished the scholars every success.
During the expedition, the participants plan to visit villages inhabited by Turkic peoples in Altai Krai and the Altai Republic and study their ancient traditions, national crafts such as carpet weaving and felt-making, as well as traditional clothing, everyday life, and ways of living.
Materials collected by archaeologists and ethnographers will help researchers study the culture and traditions of different ethnic communities and identify common features in the traditions of the peoples of Altai and Central Asia.
