TAPI Construction in Afghanistan Is Gaining Momentum: 116 KM of Highway Has Been Laid
The construction of the Afghan section of the Turkmenistan–Afghanistan–Pakistan–India (TAPI) transnational gas pipeline has reached a new stage. According to the office of the Deputy Prime Minister of Afghanistan for Economic Affairs, 116 kilometers of the pipeline have already been laid, of which 38 kilometers are completely underground, the Afghan news agency DID Press reports.
Another 135 kilometers of the highway are fully prepared for pipe laying (trenches have been cleared and the terrain has been cleared). According to the approved schedule, the key stage of the construction of the highway to the city of Herat is planned to be completed by the end of 2026.
In parallel with the construction of the linear part, field surveys and the design of the internal gas distribution network of Herat itself will begin in the near future. The supply of Turkmen natural gas to this large industrial center will give a powerful boost to the local economy: it will provide clean fuel to hundreds of manufacturing enterprises and create thousands of new jobs.
In addition, the resulting gas is planned to be used at local thermal power plants, which will allow the country to significantly reduce its dependence on electricity imports and lay the foundation for its own energy security.
