Turkmenistan Expands the Experience of Inclusive Education

A six-day expert mission from UNICEF dedicated to scaling up inclusive education in the national school and preschool system has ended in Turkmenistan. The chief technical consultant was an international expert from Portugal, Filomena Pereira, one of the leading European developers of modern methods of social adaptation of children with special needs.
During the work, UNICEF specialists and representatives of the Ministry of Education checked the implementation of the project in the regions, visiting pilot schools and kindergartens in the Akhal and Balkan velayats. The experts appreciated the work of interdisciplinary teams made up of teachers, psychologists and doctors, as well as the organization of individual educational places for children with disabilities.

The package of recommendations formed as a result of the audit will become the basis for the next stage of the reform. The priority is the introduction of a permanent mentoring system for teachers, the updating of training programs in specialized universities and the gradual dissemination of the experience of pilot institutions in Akhal and the Balkans to the entire educational network of the country.
