Elon Musk's Falcon 9 rocket stage crashes into the Moon
On Wednesday, a used piece of a SpaceX rocket crashed into the lunar surface at high speed after drifting in space since January 2025. The unintended collision occurred at approximately 02:35 Eastern Time (06:35 GMT), when the 3,900 kilogram used upper stage of the Falcon 9 rocket struck the lunar surface at a speed of roughly 2.4 kilometres per second. South Korea's aerospace agency (KASA) reported on Thursday that its lunar orbiter Danuri had captured high resolution images of the impact site. Preliminary observations show terrain changes and ejecta traces near the impact zone. A Chinese commercial space debris monitoring satellite tracked and recorded the impact location.
On 15 January 2025, SpaceX launched a Falcon 9 rocket and successfully delivered the Blue Ghost 1 lunar lander for Firefly Aerospace under NASA's Commercial Lunar Payload Services initiative. Solar activity and gravitational forces caused the unplanned return of the stage to the Moon. The stage, which was either supposed to burn up in the atmosphere or head into deep space, altered its trajectory under gravitational perturbations and ended up on a collision course with the Moon. This is not the first time space debris has hit the Moon, but each such incident raises questions about legal regulation and international responsibility for keeping space clean. Astronomers are already calling for a unified debris tracking system and mandatory disposal plans for spent stages for all spacefaring nations.
