The American biotechnology company Moderna has begun Phase I clinical trials of a vaccine against the Bundibugyo Ebola virus. The first volunteers have already received the experimental vaccine.

The vaccine is based on messenger RNA (mRNA) technology, which the company previously used to develop a COVID-19 vaccine. The trial will involve approximately 80 healthy volunteers. Researchers will evaluate the vaccine's safety, tolerability, and ability to stimulate an immune response. Currently, there is no approved vaccine against the Bundibugyo Ebola virus.

The Development Is Being Supported by CEPI

The project is being implemented with the support of the Coalition for Epidemic Preparedness (CEPI), which funds the development of vaccines and other protective measures against emerging infectious diseases.

CEPI Director General Richard Hatchett noted that the start of clinical trials is an important step in the development of a vaccine against this dangerous infection and will bring us closer to a safe and effective preventative measure.

The Outbreak Continues in Congo

The trials are taking place amid the ongoing Ebola virus outbreak in the Democratic Republic of Congo, which is considered the fastest-spreading in recorded history. According to the latest data, more than 3,800 cases have been registered, with over 1,700 deaths.

The majority of cases are in Ituri Province in the east of the country, but the disease has already been detected in other regions. According to experts, there is currently no registered vaccine for the Bundibugyo Ebola virus, so the development of new treatments remains a priority for international public health.
