Istanbul will become the main arena for world-class sporting events in 2026
Sports tourism continues its rapid rise worldwide, with more travellers choosing destinations based on the sporting events and active experiences they offer. Reflecting the growing popularity of "sportcations," industry reports indicate that bookings for sport-related activities have increased by nearly 37% over the past year, underscoring the sustained momentum of sports-inspired travel.

Following the UEFA Europa League Final in May, the city will welcome the 2026 Women's European Volleyball Championship in August and September, the Tour of İstanbul and L'Étape Türkiye by Tour de France in September, and the Presidential International Yacht Race in October and November, bringing together elite athletes and sports enthusiasts from around the world.

Bridging Asia and Europe in an iconic open-water challenge between two continents, the Bosphorus Cross-Continental Swimming Race draws thousands of athletes and spectators to the shores of İstanbul every summer. Recognised by the World Open Water Swimming Association (WOWSA) as the “World’s Best Open Water Swimming Event,” the annual race will bring together 2,500 local and international swimmers from five continents along the approximately 6.5-kilometre course from İstanbul’s Kanlıca to Kuruçeşme districts on opposite shores of the Bosphorus this year.
Tackling the powerful currents of the Bosphorus, swimmers will test their physical and mental limits during the competition. However, for the participants from 78 countries, the appeal lies not only in this race but also in the rare chance to swim between two continents, taking in İstanbul’s skyline. While athletes embark on a unique journey that bridges continents and cultures in the competition, spectators along the shore will witness an unforgettable spectacle celebrating the unifying power of sports.
