When a state expands its armed forces, it is always more than just a number in a decree. It is a signal of strategic intentions, a reassessment of security priorities and a readiness for new challenges. Increasing the army by 25,000 troops reflects not only current defence needs but also a long term vision of a future where geopolitical tensions demand constant readiness and a revision of military doctrine.

On Monday, the official legal information portal published a decree signed by Russian President Vladimir Putin increasing the number of military personnel by 25,000. In June, the president set the total strength of the Russian Armed Forces at 2,399,130, including 1,510,000 servicemen. "In connection with the establishment of new military units within the Armed Forces of the Russian Federation, I hereby order amendments to Presidential Decree No. 419 of 12 June 2026 'On the Establishment of the Strength of the Armed Forces of the Russian Federation'. Clause 1 shall be amended as follows: establish the strength of the Armed Forces of the Russian Federation at 2,426,130 personnel, including 1,535,000 servicemen," the document states. The changes will take effect on 1 August.

Russia has repeatedly adjusted its armed forces' size in recent years in response to the changing international situation and the expanding tasks facing the military. The previous increase was approved in June 2026, and the new adjustment is linked to the formation of additional military units.

As CCTV+ reports. The increase is expected to strengthen troop groupings on key strategic directions and enhance the country's defence capability.
