The 48th session of the UNESCO World Heritage Committee, held from July 19 to 29, 2026, has concluded in the South Korean city of Busan. Approximately 3,000 delegates from 196 countries participated in this major international forum.

Turkmenistan was represented at the session by Chinar Rustemova, Executive Secretary of the National Commission of Turkmenistan for UNESCO, and Begench Durdyyev, Ambassador of Turkmenistan to the Republic of Korea.

The main outcome of the meeting was the addition of 25 new sites to the UNESCO World Heritage List. These included 19 cultural, 5 natural, and 1 mixed property — the natural and cultural region of Mount Olympus in Greece.

At the conclusion of the event, participants adopted the final Busan Declaration. It was also announced that the next forum, the 49th session of the Committee, will be held from June 27 to July 7, 2027, in Istanbul. Mustafa Yurdakul, Türkiye's Permanent Representative to UNESCO, was elected as the Chairperson of the upcoming session.
