This year, the Turkmen musical community celebrates the 80th birthday of Yuri Gurgenovich Sarkisov, Honored Artist of the country and Associate Professor at the Maya Kulieva Turkmen National Conservatory. For hundreds of vocalists and classical music connoisseurs, this name is associated with a benchmark vocal school, noble style, and selfless service to art. The maestro himself modestly says that he simply dedicated his entire life to music, but behind this simplicity lies an entire era that nurtured the renowned voices of the national opera and chamber music scene.

Born in Ashgabat, Yuri Sarkisov imbibed a love of art from his early mentors at the music school, and then underwent a brilliant education at the Rimsky-Korsakov Leningrad State Conservatory. There, in the classes of legendary professors and outstanding performers such as Yevgeny Nesterenko, his distinctive performing and teaching style was forged.

Having graduated, the young musician returned to his homeland just in time for the opening of the Ashgabat Pedagogical Institute of Arts, becoming one of its pioneers. Since then, his life has been inextricably linked with nurturing Turkmenistan's young talents. Yuri Gurgenovich's pedagogical philosophy is built on three fundamental pillars: utmost exactingness, commitment to high classical culture, and the ability to avoid the temptation of easy popularity. In his lessons, vocals are not simply a sound-producing technique, but a profound co-creation where the singer learns to think, feel, and breathe music.

Over the course of his decades of teaching, he has trained over fifty brilliant vocalists. Among his graduates are People's Artists of Turkmenistan Jemal Rakhmedov and Bibi Amanova, Honored Artists Selbi Annadurdyeva, Ismail Jumayev, and Hasan Jumayev, and the renowned singer Bakhar Durdyeva. Even years after graduation, renowned soloists return to their Master's class before important premieres for wise advice and support.

In addition to teaching, Yuri Sarkisov made a significant contribution to musical scholarship and creativity. He authored a unique "Brief Musical Encyclopedia" with a glossary of terms in three languages, researched the translation of Magtymguly Pyragy's poetry into the works of national composers, and arranged numerous famous Turkmen romances for choral purposes. His many years of service to national culture earned him the honorary title of "Honored Artist of Turkmenistan" in 2017.

Today, the maestro remains full of creative energy, continuing to write scholarly works, create choral arrangements, and spark new vocal stars in the firmament of Turkmen art.
