Turkmenistan Endorsed the UN Global Road Safety Declaration
UN AND DIPLOMACY, July 23 | ORIENT. A delegation from Turkmenistan, led by Deputy Minister of Internal Affairs Ovezgeldi Kakalyev, participated in the UN General Assembly High-Level Meeting on Improving Road Safety, held in New York during the 80th session of the General Assembly.
Presenting a national statement at the 104th plenary session, the head of the Turkmen delegation briefed the international community on government measures to modernize the country's transport and logistics network.
The Turkmen delegation's presentation focused on practical steps to reduce road risks. These included the development of smart infrastructure and the comprehensive modernization of highways, as well as the introduction of digital technologies for automated traffic management in cities and on intercity highways.
Great importance was placed on a preventative culture and improving the effectiveness of road traffic inspections, as well as fostering responsible behavior among drivers and pedestrians. Ashgabat's readiness to share best practices and best international experiences with relevant UN bodies was emphasized.
Following the meeting, the UN General Assembly adopted the Declaration of Progress by a majority vote. The document set an ambitious global goal: to reduce the number of road traffic fatalities and injuries worldwide by at least 50% by 2030. The adopted initiative calls on member states to adapt their national strategies to modern urban and technological standards.
