US Allocates More Than $200 Million to the Red Cross for Emergency Humanitarian Assistance
The United States government has announced more than $200 million in funding for the International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC) and the International Federation of Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies (IFRC) to support emergency humanitarian assistance. The funding will help respond rapidly to natural disasters and provide aid to people affected by social unrest and armed conflicts.
Of the total amount, nearly $133 million will support ICRC programs assisting people living on the front lines and in hard-to-reach areas. Another $70 million will be provided to the IFRC. These resources will strengthen the work of the organization's global network of 18 million trained volunteers, who are often the first to respond to emergencies.
The U.S. Department of State will use a flexible funding mechanism that enables international humanitarian organizations to deploy available resources immediately, without delays caused by lengthy procurement and approval procedures. This approach ensures the rapid delivery of food, medicines, and other essential supplies to people in need around the world.
The new funding complements existing global humanitarian initiatives carried out in cooperation with UNICEF, the World Food Programme (WFP), and the UN Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA). The United States remains the world's largest donor of humanitarian assistance and encourages other countries to adopt faster and more effective mechanisms for delivering emergency aid.
