Yusuf Hammad, spokesman for Afghanistan's National Disaster Management Authority, said on social media platform X that the floods had caused heavy casualties in the province. He said provincial disaster management staff had arrived in the affected areas and had begun search and rescue operations, including recovering bodies, rescuing the injured and searching for the missing.

Preliminary casualty and damage figures will be released after investigations and damage assessments are completed, Hammad added. In a separate statement on X, Zabihullah Mujahid, spokesman for the Afghan government, expressed condolences to the families of the victims and stressed the need to speed up ongoing rescue efforts. According to local authorities, the hardest hit area was Parun, the provincial capital of Nuristan, where numerous homes and infrastructure facilities were damaged by the floods.
