When an innovative drug gets its first green light in China, the usual order is upended. Not long ago, the country was merely a market; today it is becoming a trendsetter in pharmaceuticals. A breakthrough therapy that outpaces the US and Japan is recognition that China's clinical science has reached a global level.

A new narcolepsy drug received its first marketing authorisation in China, the National Medical Products Administration (NMPA) said. The drug was recognised as a breakthrough therapy and underwent an accelerated approval process. "China became the first country to approve its sale. This is a historic breakthrough: we were the first to present research results and bring the drug to market," said Xu Xiaoqiang of the NMPA. Experts note that China has a broad clinical base for drug development, including for rare diseases.

"The world is paying attention to China not only because of its market but also because of its growing clinical research capabilities and improved regulatory system," said Han Fang of Peking University. Zhan Shuqin from Capital Medical University added: "China has become not just a market but a centre for developing and implementing innovative drugs."

Narcolepsy is a chronic disorder with sudden sleep attacks. The new drug offers hope to patients worldwide. The success was made possible by reforms and the participation of Chinese centres in international trials.

As CCTV+ reports. This precedent shows that China is ready to set global standards in pharmaceuticals.
